Young learners under 18
Although most of our students are aged 19 – 24, our minimum age is 13 and (especially in the summer) we also have students aged 16 and 17. Under British law, anyone below the age of 18 (U18) is considered to be a child and all schools have a legal duty to have special measures in place to protect children.
Before their son or daughter begins their course, we require parents of U18s to sign our Parental Consent Form, stipulating what level of individual liberty they consider permissible for their child.
There will be staff in the school at all times and activities are supervised. However, students will be unsupervised at the following times: travelling to and from school, when not in the classroom (except during OSE-organised activities), and after dinner.
Homestay accommodation
Homestay accommodation in single rooms is available to individual students aged 16 and over and will incur an additional fee. Please ask for more information.
Students under 16 years old must share a twin room. Students may request to share a twin room with a student of a different nationality, although availability will depend on other bookings.
Students under 18 and over 18 cannot share a room. Male and female students cannot share a room.
Host families provide breakfast and an evening meal. Families are not required to provide Halal meat, although they can provide vegetarian meals.
Special dietary requirements or allergies can be accommodated if specified at the time of booking and will incur a supplement, as outlined above.
Packed lunches are provided at the school during weekdays. At weekends, host families provide packed lunches.
Residential accommodation
All residential accommodation is in single en-suite rooms at Parade Green Halls of Residence, part of Oxford Brookes University. It is available to students aged 14 and over.
Bed linen is included, and rooms are cleaned once a week. Students are required to bring their own towels and a hairdryer, if needed.
Laundry facilities are available at the accommodation and are payable locally.
Students are required to pay a deposit of GBP 50, which will be added to the invoice issued by OSE. This deposit is refunded via Flywire, provided there is no damage to the room.
Students may be asked to change rooms during their stay so that we can ensure they are accommodated close to our residential staff members.
All meals, including breakfast, hot lunch, and hot dinner, are provided at City of Oxford College or at a nearby location in the city centre.
Airport transfers
Airport transfers can be arranged as detailed above.
Students may be required to wait a short time and share a taxi with other individual junior students from our school if a shuttle transfer is available.
All drivers are DBS checked and remain in contact with the Operations Manager.
For students travelling with their airline as an unaccompanied minor, we offer a service in which a designated person meets them on arrival and accompanies them through check-in on departure. This service is mandatory for students aged 14 and under.
Where four or more students are travelling together, please contact us for group travel rates.
English level and age requirements
Students will complete a placement test on their first day and will then be placed in international classes according to their level.
The minimum class level is usually A1 (Elementary). Tuition for beginners at A0 level is available, usually at an additional cost.
Personal information
We require a student mobile phone number for emergency contact during their stay. This number is for use by OSE staff and host families and must be a mobile number that the student will have with them while studying with us.
We will not use personal information for marketing purposes, nor will we pass it on to third parties.
Marketing purposes
Occasionally, we may take photos, videos, and quotes from students for promotional purposes.
If a student does not wish to be included in these activities, please inform a member of Oxford School of English staff so we can ensure they are not included.
Information for parents of under 18s
Please note that students will be supervised most of the time, but there will be occasions when they are not supervised. Please see the parental consent form, sent separately, for more information.
Students will be asked to follow these guidelines and take our advice to:
Call their group leader or the school if they are ill. Students must come into school if their host family is not at home or if they are staying in student accommodation. The school will arrange medical attention if necessary.
Call the school if there is any other reason why they cannot attend school.
Respect the host family’s and school’s curfew and return home no later than 9:30 pm.
Travel in pairs or groups for safety, especially in the evenings.
Carry a bus timetable or download the relevant app so they know when buses are due.
Use main roads when walking home in the evenings and avoid shortcuts.
Use pedestrian crossings when crossing the road and remember that in the UK we drive on the left-hand side.
Carry their Student Card, which includes their host family’s telephone number and the school’s emergency numbers, and not rely only on their phone.
Not accept lifts from people they do not know, or from anyone claiming to know them through a friend or host family.
Not accept alcohol from anyone and not agree to carry alcohol or drugs for anyone.
Make sure they know the meeting time, meeting place, and emergency telephone numbers when they are given free time during an excursion.
Travel in pairs or groups and inform the school at the end of the excursion and once they have arrived home, if they are allowed to make their own way home from a weekday excursion.
Speak to the welfare officer or any member of staff if they have any questions or problems.
If you need, I can also turn this into a more polished brochure-style version with a more professional school tone, because this one is clean, but still reads a bit like policy paperwork wearing a blazer.
